The Wakefield Second Shepherds’ Play ctd.

The shepherds start to search Mak and Gill’s cottage, while the criminal couple swear they are innocent, but they swear in a very smart way, as not to swear falsely. Mak says “this breakfast is my first meal today”, i.e. “I haven’t eaten your sheep”, while Gill says “If I ever cheated you, may I eat this child in the cradle!”. The shepherds continue searching the house, accompanied by Gill’s cries of indignation, but they find no sheep dead or alive. They apologize somewhat sheepishly (va-va-voom!), ask about the child’s planned godparents and leave, but after a few steps they realize they didn’t leave a customary penny as a gift to the newborn.
